Merino Longwool
Merino longwool usually refers to the German Merino longwool tradition, known as Merinolangwollschaf, rather than to an ordinary Merino with an unusually long fleece. It is part of the German Merino group alongside Merinolandschaf and Merinofleischschaf. The type was selected for longer, stronger crossbred-style wool while keeping Merino influence and a practical meat-and-wool frame.
This label matters because longwool and fine Merino are different management and marketing stories. Breeders should record staple length, fiber diameter, fleece weight, and lamb performance, then match the sheep to buyers who actually want a longer, stronger white fleece. The breed is not a substitute for Leicester Longwool or Lincoln Longwool, and it is not a superfine apparel Merino. It fits farms looking for a productive white sheep with Merino background, useful carcass traits, and wool that can serve broader textile uses than the finest Merino clips.
