Rasa Aragonesa
Rasa Aragonesa is a Spanish sheep breed from Aragon and the middle Ebro valley of northeastern Spain. The name points to its regional identity and relatively plain, medium-sized type: white fleece, bare or lightly covered head and legs, and a body built for walking dry hills, stubble fields, and scrub grazing. It is classed as an entrefino, or medium-wool, breed, but its modern importance is meat production. Many flocks supply the light lamb marketed as Ternasco de Aragon, a protected regional product.
Management commonly combines shepherded grazing with housed lamb finishing, especially where cereal crops and seasonal pastures shape the feed calendar. Ewes are valued for flocking behavior, mothering, and the ability to breed in systems that may use planned out-of-season lambing. Hoof care, parasite monitoring, and shade matter in dry Mediterranean climates, while lamb buyers often focus on carcass size and age rather than heavy wool. Breeding associations in Spain work to maintain the breed while improving reproductive and meat traits.
