Schwarzes Bergschaf
Schwarzes Bergschaf, or Black Mountain sheep, is a dark Alpine sheep associated with Bavaria, Tyrol, and neighboring mountain regions. It belongs with the colored Bergschaf group rather than with the Swiss black-brown Jura sheep. The breed is typically a medium to large, hornless mountain sheep with black fleece and the long ears and sturdy frame expected in Alpine landrace-derived sheep.
Its practical value lies in mountain grazing, conservation of colored wool genetics, and regional agricultural heritage. The fleece is stronger than fine apparel wool but useful for dark natural-color textiles when sorted well. Breeders should keep the black type distinct from brown Bergschaf and from Swiss Schwarzbraunes Bergschaf, because the names can look similar while referring to different histories. Sound legs, udder quality, lambing ability, and adaptation to high-rainfall or alpine pasture matter more than color alone. A black fleece is attractive, but a durable mountain ewe is the real goal.
