Schwarzköpfiges Fleischschaf
Schwarzköpfiges Fleischschaf is the German Blackheaded Mutton sheep, a meat breed with a black head and legs, white wool, and a strong commercial frame. It developed in Germany through the use of English meat breeds such as Hampshire and Oxford on local sheep. Selection produced a medium to large meat sheep with growth, muscling, and a clear black-headed appearance.
The breed is often used for lamb production and as a sire in commercial systems where carcass quality is the main target. Its fleece is useful but secondary to meat traits, so selection should emphasize soundness, lamb vigor, growth, and ewes that milk well. Farmers should avoid confusing it with Swiss brown-headed meat sheep or other black-faced hill breeds, since its role is different. Good management includes adequate feed for fast-growing lambs, attention to feet and parasite control, and records that prove performance rather than relying on head color alone.
