Sicilian Barbary
The Sicilian Barbary, often linked with the Italian Barbaresca sheep, is a Sicilian fat-tailed breed with historical ties to North African Barbary sheep and local island flocks. It is a large-framed Mediterranean sheep, generally kept for milk and lamb rather than fine wool. Typical animals have a white or pale fleece, a substantial fat tail or fat rump, long ears, and a strong head profile, although color markings and frame vary among flocks. The breed belongs to the same practical world as other southern Italian dairy sheep used for cheese, seasonal lamb, and adaptation to dry grazing.
Management is usually extensive or semi-extensive, with ewes grazing native pasture and receiving extra feed when milk demand is high. The fat tail reflects adaptation to feed shortages, but productive milk flocks still need reliable water, shade, mineral balance, and careful lamb rearing. Outside Sicily, the name may be unfamiliar and small populations can be hard to verify, so buyers should ask about flock records, udder quality, milking temperament, and whether the animals are pure Barbaresca or part of a local crossbred dairy group.
