South African Merino
South African Merino is the South African branch of the wider Merino family, selected under local wool and sheep-farming conditions. It should be distinguished from South African Meat Merino, which is a separate meat-wool breed. South African Merinos are primarily associated with fine white wool, but many flocks also select for constitution, fertility, and useful lamb production in dryland and Karoo-style environments.
Management depends on serious wool records: fiber diameter, staple strength, fleece weight, yield, and classing decisions drive much of the flock's value. At the same time, ewes must walk, rear lambs, and hold condition under variable rainfall and grazing. Breeders should select for plain-bodied, productive sheep suited to their region rather than copying an unsuitable Merino style from another country. Buyers need to ask whether a flock is bred for fine wool, balanced wool and meat, or stud traits, because all may carry the South African Merino name while serving different farm goals.
