South Dorset
South Dorset is best understood as a Down-type meat sheep label associated especially with New Zealand breeding, where Southdown influence was combined with Dorset or Dorset Down backgrounds. The result sat between parent traditions: the compact carcass and early finishing associated with Southdown blood, plus Dorset usefulness for maternal work and extended-season lamb production. It is separate from the older Dorset Horn and Polled Dorset breeds, even when the names sound close.
A South Dorset flock would be managed with meat-lamb goals in mind: sound feet, easy lambing, maternal ability, and rams or ewes that can add shape without losing practical paddock performance. Because the formal breeding structure has shifted over time, buyers should ask how a flock is recorded and whether animals are being bred through toward Dorset Down, maintained as South Dorset, or used commercially as a composite.
