South Wales Mountain
South Wales Mountain sheep are hardy Welsh hill sheep shaped by the wet, open uplands of southern Wales. They are usually white-faced, active, and moderate in size, with the alert movement and constitution expected of sheep that gather over rough ground. Their value lies in the ability to raise lambs from sparse grazing and difficult weather rather than in heavy fleece weight or show-ring scale.
Flocks are commonly managed outdoors for much of the year, with breeding decisions favoring feet, mothering, thrift, and lambs that can either finish off grass or enter crossbreeding systems. The fleece is useful but secondary to hill performance. For smallholders and conservation graziers, South Wales Mountain sheep can be practical where land is uneven and forage changes by season, but they still need careful handling facilities and routine parasite planning.
