Spælsau
Spælsau is a Norwegian short-tailed sheep descended from the northern European landrace tradition. It is usually described as one of Norway's old sheep types, with a light, active build, natural color variation, and a double fleece that can carry a long outer coat over softer underwool. Unlike heavy lowland meat breeds, Spælsau was shaped for rough grazing, cold weather, and seasonal movement through Scandinavian farm landscapes.
Keepers value Spælsau for hardy lambs, useful meat, and fleece that appeals to handspinners and textile producers when sorted well. The coat and tail type call for management different from modern white composite sheep, including attention to natural color genetics and fleece separation at shearing. In conservation or homestead settings, Spælsau works best where fencing is secure, forage is varied, and breeders keep a clear eye on sound legs and mothering ability.
