Steigar
Steigar is a Norwegian sheep from Steigen in Nordland, developed from local northern sheep with influence from British Leicester and Cheviot breeding. It became one of the native foundations behind Norway's white sheep population, while surviving as a distinct conservation breed in smaller numbers. Steigar sheep are associated with northern coastal and inland conditions, productive lambs, and a practical wool-and-meat role rather than a decorative niche.
Today the breed matters to keepers interested in Norwegian genetic resources, flock history, and sheep that can perform on grass in a cool climate. Breeding choices should protect the remaining type while still selecting for lamb survival, udder quality, feet, and usable fleece. Because Steigar numbers are limited, sourcing animals may involve conservation networks, semen history, or flock-book programs rather than ordinary commercial markets.
