Tautra
Tautra, also called Tautersheep in some sources, refers to a historic Norwegian sheep associated with the island of Tautra in Trøndelag. Its origin has been described in more than one way, with older accounts linking it either to imported fine-wool sheep and local Norse stock or to later British influence. That uncertainty is part of the breed's story: it is a local island sheep name preserved mostly through conservation and breed-history references.
For present-day keepers, Tautra is unlikely to be encountered as a widely available flock-book breed. The name is most useful when discussing Norwegian sheep ancestry, lost local populations, and the background of rare breeds such as Grey Trønder. Any practical breeding claim should be checked carefully against the flock's own history. Where Tautra ancestry is mentioned, the responsible emphasis is preservation, documentation, and avoiding exaggerated claims about purity.
