Tiroler Steinschaf
Tiroler Steinschaf is the Tyrolean rock sheep, an old Austrian alpine breed from the Tyrol and nearby mountain regions. It is a hardy, medium-sized sheep with color variation that may include white, gray, or black, and it has traditionally been kept for meat and wool in steep landscapes. The breed is distinct from the larger Tiroler Bergschaf, even though both belong to the wider alpine sheep world.
Tiroler Steinschaf suits extensive mountain grazing, conservation flocks, and farms that value sure-footed animals over maximum lowland growth. Owners should select for strong legs, hard feet, lamb vigor, and fleece that suits the local market or craft use. In small populations, maintaining unrelated breeding lines matters as much as ordinary production traits. The breed's appeal is strongest where heritage, alpine adaptation, and practical grazing work belong together.
