Touabire
Touabire is a large Sahelian hair sheep associated with Mauritania, northern Senegal, and nearby arid pastoral regions. It is also known in some sources as White Maure or White Arab, reflecting its place among long-legged West African sheep adapted to dry seasonal grazing. The breed is kept mainly for meat, with a tall frame, convex facial profile in many animals, and a coat suited to heat rather than wool production.
Management of Touabire sheep is tied to pastoral movement, household fattening, festival markets, and careful use of scarce feed and water. The breed can struggle in humid climates, so keepers should not treat it as a universal tropical sheep. Breeding priorities include frame, fertility, sound legs, and the ability to maintain condition under Sahelian conditions. In crossbreeding, Touabire influence is often used to add size and meat value.
