White Dorper
The White Dorper is a South African meat sheep developed from the same broad foundation as the Dorper, combining Dorset Horn and Blackhead Persian ancestry for growth, hardiness, and carcass quality. Unlike the black-headed Dorper, the White Dorper is selected for an all-white body and head, with good skin pigmentation still desired around exposed areas. It is a shedding sheep, carrying a mixture of hair and wool that should cast naturally as the weather warms.
Commercial producers use White Dorpers as terminal sires and as part of low-labor meat flocks, especially where wool income is secondary to lamb production. They cope well with dry country and browse, but they still need selection for feet, shedding, maternal ability, and parasite resilience in wetter regions. Some animals retain more fleece than others, so buyers often look closely at shedding records and flock conditions rather than assuming every White Dorper will be maintenance-free. Routine vaccination, secure fencing, and controlled nutrition around lambing remain part of practical management.
