Xaxi Ardia
Xaxi Ardia, more often written Sasi Ardi in Basque and Spanish sources, is a rustic sheep type from the Basque Country and nearby western Pyrenean areas. The name is commonly interpreted as a brush or bramble sheep, reflecting its use in rough, wooded, and shrubby grazing rather than on improved pasture alone. It is a light, agile domestic sheep, usually kept for meat from lambs. Coat color and horn expression vary by flock, and the breed has not been standardized internationally in the way major commercial breeds have.
Management usually follows extensive or semi-extensive hill farming. These sheep are expected to travel, browse mixed vegetation, and lamb with limited interference, but that does not remove the need for tagging, health checks, and planned breeding. Conservation flocks place value on preserving local adaptation and avoiding uncontrolled crossing with more common dairy or meat breeds of the region. Prospective keepers outside its home area should treat the name as a rare regional breed label and verify provenance carefully.
