Xinjiang Finewool
Xinjiang Finewool is a Chinese fine-wool sheep breed developed in the Xinjiang region for wool production under the dry, continental conditions of northwestern China. It was formed from local sheep and improved fine-wool breeding influences, with the aim of combining a Merino-type fleece with better adaptation to long grazing seasons, cold winters, and arid or semi-arid rangeland. Animals are typically white and are used for fine apparel wool as well as meat from cull animals and lambs.
Flocks are commonly managed in range systems where nutrition changes sharply between seasons, so body condition before breeding and late pregnancy has a direct effect on lamb survival and fleece growth. Good shearing, clean handling areas, and careful classing are important because the breed's value depends heavily on fiber quality. It is not a common backyard breed in many countries, and buyers should distinguish true Xinjiang Finewool breeding stock from general fine-wool or Chinese Merino-type sheep when records are available.
