Yunnan Semifinewool
Yunnan Semifinewool is a Chinese sheep breed developed in Yunnan Province for semi-fine wool and meat in the upland conditions of southwest China. It reflects planned breeding from local sheep and improved wool breeds, aiming for a fleece finer and more uniform than coarse native wool while retaining enough hardiness for mountain grazing. Animals are usually white and are kept where cool highland pastures, variable rainfall, and mixed farming systems shape sheep production.
The breed's usefulness depends on both fleece handling and basic flock productivity. Clean shearing, protection from mud and vegetable contamination, and selection for staple quality help preserve wool value. In Yunnan's wetter uplands, foot health and internal parasite control may need more attention than in arid range breeds. Farmers also select for lamb survival, ewe milk, and body condition through seasonal feed changes. Outside its home region, Yunnan Semifinewool should be identified through breeder records or local program sources rather than by fleece description alone.
