Short-Tailed Chinchilla
Chinchilla chinchilla
This wild Andean chinchilla has dense gray fur, a stocky body, rounded ears and a short furry tail. It lives among high mountain rocks and feeds on vegetation. Conservation collections provide cool, dry quarters with rocky retreats and dust-bathing opportunities. Females bear live young. It is distinct from the domestic long-tailed chinchilla. CITES Appendix I covers wild chinchillas; the boliviana form is also ESA-listed as endangered.
