Silverstone's Poison Frog
Ameerega silverstonei
This large poison frog comes from Peru's Cordillera Azul. Adults have a yellow, orange or red front half and a variable amount of black toward the rear. Specialist breeders provide cool, humid planted terrariums with leaf litter, climbing cover and varied insect prey, avoiding the heat used for some lowland dart frogs. Females lay eggs, which males guard; the larvae develop in water. Its larger body and red-and-black pattern differ from the smaller red-headed thumbnail frogs.
