Sonoran Desert Toad
Incilius alvarius
This large toad lives in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico and is maintained by specialist amphibian keepers. Adults are olive-gray with large glands behind the eyes and a pale wart near the mouth. Enclosures need sheltered ground space, burrowing substrate, moist retreats, clean water and suitable prey. Females lay long chains of eggs in water after seasonal rains. Its gland secretions contain potent toxins that can kill pets and harm people, so casual handling is unsuitable.
