Southern Alligator Lizard
Elgaria multicarinata
This long-tailed lizard ranges from the western United States into Baja California. Its brown or gray body has dark crossbars, pale eyes and short legs. Specialist reptile keepers provide roomy enclosures with burrowing substrate, cover, drinking water and varied insects.
Females lay eggs and may guard the clutch. It can bite and shed its tail if restrained. In California, sport take requires a fishing license, with a daily bag and possession limit of two; take from state parks and designated reserves is prohibited.
