Southern Marbled Newt
Triturus pygmaeus
The southern marbled newt is a small green-and-black newt of southwestern Iberia. Its belly is pale with larger white spots, helping separate it from the larger marbled newt. Females have an orange back line; males grow a modest breeding crest. It lays individual eggs folded into aquatic leaves and spends part of the year on land. Specialist keepers provide cool breeding water and damp refuges for the land phase. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
