Southern Red Muntjac
Muntiacus muntjak
The southern red muntjac is a small, reddish Southeast Asian deer. Males have short antlers on long forehead pedicles and prominent upper canine teeth. It browses leaves and fruit in forest and scrub, often giving a loud alarm bark. Zoos provide planted cover, shelter and careful pairing because adults can be territorial. Females bear live calves. Current taxonomy separates this southern species from the northern red muntjac, Muntiacus vaginalis.
