Spinifex Hopping Mouse
Notomys alexis
The spinifex hopping mouse is an Australian desert rodent with long hind legs, large ears and a long tail ending in a small brush. It feeds on seeds and other foods and shelters in communal burrows. Experienced small-mammal keepers and zoos provide secure sandy quarters, nesting retreats and room to hop. Females bear live young. This is a native wild mouse, not a fancy mouse variety, and its source and local wildlife rules matter.
