Spiny-Headed Treefrog
Triprion spinosus
This unusual treefrog occurs from southern Mexico to Panama and is bred in zoo conservation programs and specialist collections. Its head develops bony spikes as it matures. Keepers provide tall planted enclosures with climbing cover, humid retreats, suitable water-filled breeding sites and varied insect prey. Females lay eggs beside small pools, where the tadpoles develop, and can provide unfertilized eggs as food. Its spiny head differs from the broad, flattened snout of the Yucatan casque-headed treefrog.
