Spotted Seal
Phoca largha
The spotted seal is a North Pacific true seal with dark spots on a pale gray coat and no external ear flaps. It feeds on fish and other marine prey and rests on ice or coastal haul-outs. Specialist aquariums require treated pools and dry resting areas; females bear live pups. The Marine Mammal Protection Act regulates US take and import. Only the southern population segment is ESA-listed as threatened, not the entire species.
