Sri Lankan Ornamental Tarantula
Poecilotheria fasciata
The Sri Lankan ornamental tarantula is a tree-dwelling species from Sri Lanka. Adults have gray and dark dorsal patterns and lemon-yellow front-thigh undersides. Narrow or incomplete dark bands beneath the rear thighs distinguish it from the broad bands of P. ornata. Experienced hobbyists keep it singly with upright bark, a secure retreat, ventilation and water.
Avoid handling; Poecilotheria bites can cause severe pain and muscle cramps. Females lay eggs in silk sacs. It is US-listed endangered and international trade is regulated under CITES Appendix II.
