Stična's Olm
Proteus anguinus
Stična's olm is a pale, blind aquatic salamander with an elongated body, tiny limbs and pink external gills. Following a 2026 split, Proteus anguinus refers to populations in a narrow part of central Slovenia around Stična, rather than all Dinaric olms. Females lay eggs underwater. Olms are studied and bred by cave research and conservation specialists, using stable cave-water conditions. This species' origin matters when interpreting older records. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
