Surinam Toad
Pipa pipa
The Surinam toad is a flattened, leaf-shaped aquatic frog from tropical South America. Specialist keepers maintain it in freshwater aquariums with cover and animal prey. Its tiny eyes, broad webbed hindfeet and sensitive star-tipped fingers suit searching along the bottom. It lays eggs that are embedded in the female's back, where the young develop before emerging as froglets. Unlike the smaller Sabana Surinam toad, it does not release free-swimming tadpoles. Adults remain largely aquatic.
