Swordtail Newt
Cynops ensicauda
The swordtail newt comes from Japan's Ryukyu Islands. Its dark brown-black back contrasts with an orange belly marked in black, and its long tail is especially pronounced in females. The nominate form shown here lacks the gold speckles common in the Okinawan form. It lays eggs on aquatic plants. Experienced keepers provide clean water, land access and hiding places; seasonal land use varies among animals. It is distinct from the Japanese fire-bellied newt. US injurious-salamander restrictions apply.
