Syrian Hamster

Mesocricetus auratus

The Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), or golden hamster, is a solitary burrowing rodent native to arid country and agricultural edges of northern Syria and southern Turkey. Most pet and laboratory lines descend from a small number of animals collected near Aleppo in the twentieth century, later broadened by additional imports. The wild type is golden brown with a pale underside, but domestic hamsters now occur in many colors, patterns, and coat types, including longhaired teddy bear varieties. A mostly nocturnal schedule, cheek pouches, a short tail, and a habit of storing food in nest chambers are defining features.

As pets, Syrian hamsters need single housing after weaning; adult pairs commonly fight and can injure or kill each other. A suitable enclosure offers deep bedding for burrowing, an appropriately large solid exercise wheel, chewable furnishings, a dark hide, and reliable escape prevention. Their diet is usually based on a balanced hamster mix or lab block with small portions of fresh foods and limited sugary treats. Gentle, consistent handling works better than waking them abruptly during the day. Breeding requires careful timing because females may attack males outside estrus, and litters should be left undisturbed during the first days to reduce stress.

A long-haired Syrian hamster is not a separate species or breed. In pet shops across North America it is very often sold as […]
