Tayra
Eira barbara
The tayra is a large tropical American member of the weasel family with a long body, powerful legs and a bushy tail. Dark animals often have a paler brown head and light throat patch. It climbs readily and eats fruit as well as animal prey. Zoos keep it in secure enclosures with climbing routes, dens and opportunities to forage. Females bear live young. It is also called the irara; unlike a domestic ferret, it is a large wild forest carnivore.
