Texas Brown Tarantula
Aphonopelma hentzi
The Texas brown tarantula is widespread in the central United States, from the Mississippi River west to parts of Arizona. Females have a light brown carapace, dark hairy legs and a dark abdomen with rust-colored hairs, but color varies and overlaps with other Aphonopelma. It lives in burrows or sheltered scrapes and is kept by tarantula hobbyists. Provide a low, secure enclosure with a hide, diggable substrate and water. Avoid handling and its irritating defensive hairs. Females lay eggs in a silk sac.
