Texas Toad
Anaxyrus speciosus
The Texas toad is a brown to gray burrowing toad of the south-central United States and nearby Mexico, maintained by specialist amphibian keepers. Adults have a broad head, stout body and mottled warty skin. Enclosures need loose substrate, hides, moist retreats, clean water and suitable invertebrate prey. Females lay eggs in temporary pools following rain, and tadpoles develop in water. Its relatively plain mottled back lacks the large, pale-edged paired patches of the Great Plains toad.
