Purple Tree Tarantula
Tapinauchenius plumipes
The purple tree tarantula is an arboreal species from Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil. The older hobby name Trinidad mahogany does not establish a Trinidad origin. Its current broad identity includes spiders formerly called T. violaceus, T. purpureus and T. gigas, with variable purple, brown or orange coloration. Experienced keepers provide a secure, ventilated vertical enclosure with bark retreats, substrate and water. Avoid handling this fast spider. Females lay eggs in silk sacs.
