Trinidad Poison Frog
Mannophryne trinitatis
Endemic to Trinidad, this small stream frog is kept by amphibian specialists and zoos. Its brown back and mottled dark sides blend into forest litter; adult females have yellow throats, while calling males can turn black. Keepers provide moist planted enclosures, leaf litter, shelters, small supplemented insects and clean water. Females lay eggs on land. Males guard the clutches and carry hatched tadpoles to pools. It lacks the skin alkaloids of brightly colored poison frogs.
