V-Horn Hissing Cockroach
Elliptorhina laevigata
The V-horn hissing cockroach is a large, wingless Elliptorhina maintained in specialist colonies. Adults develop striking red, orange, black and yellow coloration after a much darker juvenile stage, and males have the characteristic raised head shield. Captive colonies use warmth, well-ventilated shelters, relatively dry substrate with access to moisture and varied food.
Females retain their egg cases and release live young. All stages climb, so the enclosure needs secure upper edges. The adult male shown has a dark body with narrow golden abdominal bands and two low pronotal horns.
