Western Leopard Toad
Sclerophrys pantherina
This large, boldly patterned toad occurs in coastal southwestern South Africa and is maintained by specialist amphibian keepers and conservation collections. Adults have pale-edged dark patches on a tan back and a lighter underside. Suitable enclosures provide sheltered ground space, moist retreats, clean water and varied invertebrate prey. Females lay strings of eggs in water, where tadpoles develop. Its restricted range distinguishes it from other leopard-patterned African toads, so provenance matters.
