Western Tiger Salamander
Ambystoma mavortium
The western tiger salamander is a large, burrowing salamander of western and central North America. The barred form shown here has yellow bands across a dark body. Females lay eggs underwater; larvae may transform into land adults or retain gills in some populations.
Keepers provide land adults with cool, damp digging substrate, hides and invertebrate foods. The Sonoran subspecies is federally endangered, and US injurious-salamander restrictions cover the species. It is a wild salamander, distinct from the axolotl.
