White-Lipped Deer
Cervus albirostris
The white-lipped deer is a large high-altitude deer from the Tibetan Plateau region. It has a dark brown coat, pale rump and conspicuous white muzzle and chin; males carry branching antlers. It grazes and browses mountain vegetation. Zoos maintain herds with secure outdoor space, shelter and separate areas for breeding management. Females bear live calves. It is also called Thorold's deer and was formerly placed in the genus Przewalskium.
