Zhongdian
The Zhongdian yak is a regional domestic yak type from the Zhongdian area of northwest Yunnan, now commonly associated with Shangri-La County and Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The breed developed on high, wet-cold alpine meadows at the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where Tibetan herders relied on yaks for milk, meat, transport, hides, and dung fuel. Animals are generally hardy, medium-sized mountain bovines with dense coats; dark coloration is common, though local herds may show the broader coat variation seen in domestic yaks.
In practice, Zhongdian yaks are managed in grazing systems that follow seasonal pasture growth and severe winter feed limits. Calves, lactating females, and working animals may need stored forage during snow or late-spring shortages, and heat stress is a bigger concern if animals are moved to lower elevations. For breed conservation or farm purchasing, origin records are useful because Chinese yak types are regional and can be crossed outside their home area; performance claims should be judged against altitude, forage, and management conditions.
