Crossbred

Crossbred yakalo refers to yakalo animals produced from yak and American bison ancestry rather than a standardized breed. The name yakalo has been used for experimental Bos grunniens × Bison bison hybrids, mostly in North American livestock history, with the aim of combining yak hardiness with bison traits. Because these hybrids are uncommon and not consistently selected, individuals can vary in size, coat, hump development, horn form, fertility, and behavior.

Anyone keeping or breeding yakalo crosses needs to treat them as large, powerful bovines with possible wildlife-management issues, not as routine cattle. Secure fencing, safe handling alleys, clear source records, and veterinary planning are important, and local rules for bison hybrids may apply. Breeding plans should be transparent about the cross and generation, since fertility and traits can be unpredictable and mislabeling creates problems for buyers, conservation herds, and neighboring livestock operations.
