Yellow-Bellied Toad
Bombina variegata
This small European frog lives around shallow pools and is kept by amphibian hobbyists. Its brown, warty upperparts conceal a bright yellow belly patterned in black. Keepers provide clean shallow water, accessible land, shelters and small invertebrate prey. Females lay eggs in water, where the tadpoles develop. Skin secretions can irritate, so handling should be minimal. Its yellow underside distinguishes it from the red-orange European fire-bellied toad, although the two can look similar from above.
