American

The American zebra finch is a domestic zebra finch type associated with North American aviculture and exhibition breeding. Zebra finches are small Australian estrildid finches, but domestic lines now include many color mutations and regional show preferences. American birds are often discussed as a practical, active aviary type rather than the heavier exhibition forms favored in some other countries, though individual breeder lines can vary.

Keepers should house American zebra finches in pairs or compatible groups with room for real flight, clean seed, greens, minerals, and controlled nesting opportunities. They breed readily, so responsible aviculture includes managing clutch frequency and separating birds when rest is needed. For exhibition or color work, records of mutation background, parentage, and show type help distinguish an American line from a generic domestic zebra finch.

Colors: Black Breasted, Black Cheek, Cfw, Chestnut Flanked, Cream, Fawn, Lightback, Orange Breasted, Penguin, Pied, White, Wild Type Grey
