Frequently asked questions

Why are ball pythons called royal pythons?

Royal python is the other common name for the species, used widely in Europe. One popular story says African rulers, including Cleopatra by some accounts, wore these docile snakes as living jewelry. That royal history is why names like Pharaoh, Rani, and Majesty suit them so well.

Should I name my ball python after its morph?

Many keepers do, and it works especially well when the morph is visually striking. A banana morph named Butters or a piebald named Freckles is instantly memorable. Just remember morphs describe pattern and color genes, so the name will still fit as your snake grows and its colors mature.

Do ball pythons know their names?

No. Snakes have no external ears and sense the world mainly through vibration, smell, and heat. Your ball python will learn to associate you with safety and food, but it will never come when called. Choose a name for its look, its morph, or simply your favorite fictional serpent.

Is it okay to rename an adult ball python?

Completely fine. Since snakes do not respond to names at all, renaming has zero effect on the animal. Rehomed ball pythons get new names all the time, so pick whatever fits its personality and pattern in your eyes.
