Frequently asked questions

Why are bettas called Siamese fighting fish?

Bettas are native to Thailand, historically known as Siam, where males were selectively bred for their territorial sparring. That heritage is why Thai names like Siam, Mekong, and Malee feel so fitting, and why playful fighter names like Tyson or Bruce Lee are a community favorite.

Should I name my betta after its color?

Color names are the most popular choice for bettas because their finnage is the whole show. Match a red veiltail with Crimson or Merlot, a blue halfmoon with Cobalt or Sapphire, and a multicolor with Galaxy or Prism. Real morph names like Koi and Mustard also double as great names.

Do betta fish recognize their names?

They cannot hear a name the way mammals do, but bettas are surprisingly observant. Many learn to recognize their keeper, follow a finger along the glass, and show up front at feeding time. Say the name during feedings and your betta will at least associate the ritual with you.

Do I need different style names for male and female bettas?

No rule requires it. Males get flashier fighter and jewel names because of their long fins, while females in sorority tanks often get a matching set of softer names. Pick whatever suits the individual fish, since personality varies a lot from betta to betta.
