Hypo
A hypo ball python, short for hypomelanistic, is a recessive morph that reduces dark pigment and gives the snake a softer, cleaner, lower-contrast appearance. In ball pythons, hypo is often connected with ghost lines, though naming can vary by breeder and lineage. The trait can make browns look faded, blacks look muted, and combination morphs appear brighter or less muddy as they age.
Hypo ball pythons are cared for like other ball pythons, with steady warmth, humidity, hides, and appropriate prey. The main practical concern is line clarity. A visual hypo has two copies of the trait, while a het hypo may look normal, and not all hypo-like labels guarantee compatibility. Breeders should preserve line information and avoid mixing uncertain ghost or hypo claims. Buyers should ask whether the animal is visual, proven het, possible het, or part of a multi-gene project.
