Mahogany

A mahogany ball python is an incomplete dominant morph that deepens brown and red tones, reduces some pattern, and can give the animal a rich, dark, polished appearance. It is used in many dark and high-contrast projects because it changes both color and pattern without always being obvious in simple photos. The super form is commonly known as suma and may be very dark, sometimes approaching a nearly patternless chocolate or black look.

Mahogany ball pythons are kept under the same conditions as other ball pythons. Breeders should track the gene carefully because it can be confused with other darkening traits, especially in multi-gene animals. Pairings with Mojave, GHI, clown, hypo, and yellow belly complex genes can produce very different results, so parent records are valuable. Buyers should ask whether the snake is single-gene mahogany, suma, or a combination, and should compare photos in natural light when possible.
