Normal
The normal ball python is the wild-type form of Python regius, the West and Central African species from which captive color and pattern morphs are compared. It has a dark brown to black background, golden or tan side blotches often described as alien heads, a pale belly, and a rounded head with heat-sensing pits along the lip. In the pet trade it may be called classic, wild type, or normal, but a captive-bred normal is not a lesser animal; it is the baseline look of the species.
Normals are common in rescues, starter collections, and breeding rooms because they are affordable and easy to identify. They need the same careful setup as expensive morphs, including secure hides, a warm basking area, clean water, and humidity high enough for complete sheds. Buyers should look for established feeders and avoid assuming a cheap snake is low-maintenance or disposable. In breeding, normals are useful for proving out recessive genes, but they also produce many offspring with modest demand, so planning homes matters.
