Scaleless Head

Scaleless head is a heritable ball python scale-reduction morph in which the head scales are missing, reduced, or broken into irregular patches while most of the body remains normally scaled. It is generally treated as an incomplete-dominant trait; animals with one copy may show the scaleless head appearance, while pairings can produce more extensively scaleless offspring. The trait changes texture and scale coverage rather than base color, so it may appear alongside pastel, pied, clown, or many other ball python morphs.

A snake with reduced head scales is kept in the same temperature and humidity range as other ball pythons, but enclosure surfaces deserve extra attention. Rough hides, abrasive decor, and very dry conditions can cause avoidable rubs or shedding problems, especially in animals with more extensive scale loss. Welfare opinions differ on breeding toward fully scaleless ball pythons, so transparency about genetics and the actual condition of the animal matters. For a pet, choose a well-started feeder with clean skin, normal movement, and no chronic rubbing around the head.
